Dystopolis is a strategic board game for 2-5 players that takes about 90 minutes to play. The theme of the game is a not-so-distant future where the free market has run amok and resulted in a decadent society. Here everyone is occupied seeking instant pleasures or mesmerizing power. As a player you belong to the new capitalistic elite in the megacity Dystopolis. The aim is to outmanoeuvre your rivals through clever investments and by maximizing the rewards from your companies. The money is used to shamelessly bribe your opponents into obedience. If that fails, you can still try to purge your rivals’ investments or even take over threatening companies – as long as the voting is in your favor!
The game mechanics in Dystopolis consists of an interesting mix between area control, stock holding and economic negotiation through bribes and bidding. The strategy in Dystopolis is centered around the placement of company tiles and investment tokens. At game start the game board only consists of one tile representing the city centre. The players add tiles to the board during each round. Then the players need to invest money in the companies to claim ownership, which gives them influence over surrounding companies. The companies establish connections to each other. More connections to other companies increases the revenue, but also makes the company more vulnerable to attacks. A player with limited influence in an area can compensate for this by having plenty of money which can be used to bribe other players to help you achieve your goals.
